The Old Radio Soldier

Come twig light on frightened steep slippy streets
We all rushed home like safety sheep
And in our pen we would soon settle down for the night
Quickly munching spam and gruel and august folly tripe
For the old radio soldier would soon be on blathering
After the weather forecast we all would be predicting
Somewhat positive chose sunny somewhat realistic chose extremely rainy
Oh thank goodness our master had kindly built us proper drainage

Anyway the show began at 7.02
After the news blues depressor had once again been clued us
We had even less money than yesterday
When we had eat the carpet and dust mites by the acre
So how those fifty eight minutes soon had become our single day pleasure

Tonight’s tale now began with the old radio soldier in fine form and fettle
The sound effects were sublime especially the whistle on the kettle
This made us so thirsty that we had a drink of leaky roof raindrops
Soon this became a feast when the entire roof was blown off
Luckily our radio was battery powered and covered waterproof
So we could still enjoy our joyous dissertation
The story got so exciting and intense we gasped in anticipation
How would it finish we wondered happy or sad
Would there be a final twist to enthral us and to grab away
All this dismal surroundings falling fatefully around our ears

Well the old radio soldier this perfect compere did not disappoint us
It was a magical night as we drifted away entangled in his majesty
The story ended and the way he had told it
had us truly in his pocket until next time
What was this fabulous ending I hear you all scream out in mimed contortions

Well it involved a flying dustbin lid and an hot cabbage and it was truly fab
